In an effort to keep readers coming back, The New York Times has opened up to ‘outside content’, putting the recent Indian accusations on its front page. The New York Times also launched Times Extra – a service that incorporates content from other news sources and blogs. This comes as more and more people look to the Internet as a source of news, and efforts to remain in the top ranks sees news services opening up new trends.
The New York Times also removed the condition of paid subscriptions so that they could have more readers coming on to their site. The site is using Blogrunner (a news aggregator owned by NYT) to incorporate third-party content. Marc Frons, the chief technology officer for digital operations at NYT states:
